[Guest Blog by SMART's Director of National Outreach Jasmine Hilbert]

Exciting things are happening in Charlotte as we continue to build a Community of Empowerment. With the momentum ramping up for next month’s conference, we are celebrating our progress, creating new connections, and expanding the reach of SMART in our area.

To date, we have successfully trained 25 individuals in SMART, with two more major training sessions planned for March and May. Our impact is growing, and it shows—five new face-to-face meetings have been launched in the Charlotte area, offering more opportunities for support and connection.

We’ve also been listening! Through participant surveys, we’ve gained insight into the positive effects of SMART on people’s lives. One attendee shared, “It was awesome! Nice job, well facilitated, and good discussion.” Another highlighted the best part of the meetings: “Spending time with my recovery family.” Attendees appreciate the structure, discussions, and strong sense of community—though we did hear one common suggestion: bring snacks! If that’s the only concern, we’ll take it as a win!

Our A-MAH-Zing outreach coordinator, LaNija, has been hard at work building connections. She has already organized two successful volunteer connection events, bringing trained folks together to strengthen relationships. A third event is on the horizon following the conference—this time, inviting not just trained volunteers but also participants and those curious about SMART to connect and learn more.

Additionally, LaNija has partnered with NAMI Charlotte to highlight the important intersection of mental health and recovery. Together, they will be hosting a community beautification event at the South End Rail Trail on April 2nd from 3-5 PM EST—a chance to give back while strengthening bonds. You can sign up to participate HERE.

On Friday, March 7th, LaNija will also be representing SMART at the One Community in Recovery Conference in Greensboro, NC, spreading awareness about peer support and multiple pathways to recovery.

How You Can Help Grow SMART in Your Area

Feeling inspired? Here’s how you can contribute to building a stronger SMART community where you are:

1️. Host a meetup – Connect with facilitators in your area and organize a get-together. Bonus points if you invite folks from your meetings!
2️. Get involved – Join local coalitions, partner with NAMI, or engage with others passionate about recovery.
3️. Educate – Help spread the word about SMART Recovery and multiple pathways to recovery in your community by hosting an info session at your local library or community center.

If you have questions or need support, reach out anytime at outreach@smartrecovery.org. We’re excited to see you at the conference and continue growing together on this journey!
