Self-esteem is often described as a key to personal success and fulfillment. We are thrilled that Dr. Michael Edelstein will join us to talk about this core, but often misunderstood, topic which has particular relevance for those with addictive behaviors.
Dr. Edelstein was mentored by Dr. Albert Ellis, father of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT), and has been acclaimed as an expert in the discipline, in his own right, for many years. Three Minute Therapy made him famous, as he brought a practical, no-nonsense, quick, simple, and elegant application to some of REBT’s most powerful tools.
His three-minute exercises will be of particular interest for those at SMART. These are some of the same tools from Ellis that we teach as a way to fight back against addictive tendencies and other behaviors that may feel good in the short-term, but carry potentially heavy, negative consequences in the longer-term.
Ellis’s “ABC tool” is one that most participants at SMART have at least passing familiarity with. It can be an elusive tool, and Michael’s approach can help us gain a clearer understanding of how to use it. Using his approach we can learn to uncover and vigorously dispute unhelpful beliefs about ourselves and the world that are faulty or unhelpful in the pursuit of our goals.
SMART teaches that faulty thinking and beliefs, can fuel addictive behaviors by adversely affecting our mood, well-being and enjoyment of life. Examining our thinking and actively questioning our assumptions allows us to stay aligned with our personal values and goals, and live fuller lives.
We live in a world that is geared towards short-term satisfaction, at the expense of longer-term realizable goals that often have considerably higher payoffs. Lack of coping skills may contribute to addiction, and other maladaptive behaviors. It is often our belief(s) that may be holding us back, and often those don’t hold up to scrutiny!
Dr. Edelstein is highly renowned for his ability to make his ideas readily accessible to everyone with direct, clean, clear examples and answers to your questions. He is hands-down one of our most popular speakers, so this winter event will be highly interesting to participants, facilitators and all our SMART friends.
