SMART Meeting Facilitator Spotlight: Dan Hostetler – Above & Beyond Family Recovery Center

Written by Admin | 9 Jan 2020

In a short time, Dan Hostetler has established himself as a leading SMART Recovery ambassador.

As executive director of Above & Beyond Family Recovery Center, located in one of Chicago’s poorest neighborhoods, Dan and his group have demonstrated the effectiveness of choice in recovery programs.

After taking the SMART Recovery Facilitator Training, Dan introduced SMART Recovery meetings into Above & Beyond’s regular meeting schedule. Over 25 weekly meetings use a variety of evidence-based curriculums, such as REBT, Trauma, Brainspotting, Life Purpose (Viktor Frankl/ Logotherapy), Learning to Love Yourself, EFT, Music and Art Therapy (TraumART), Loneliness, Rage Reduction, and Procrastination.

After a few weeks of offering AA, SMART Recovery, Men or Women for Sobriety, WRAP, and Recovery Dharma (Replacing Refuge Recovery), Hostetler quickly realized that SMART meetings were becoming the overwhelming favorites. As a result, SMART Recovery’s footprint in Chicago has grown substantially, with Above & Beyond hosting more than 20% of the meetings. The average attendance of each meeting is 24 people. Above & Beyond Family Recovery Center also offers Family & Friends meetings Monday through Friday.

Dan’s success was noticed by Tom Horvath, co-founder of SMART Recovery:

“I am a treatment professional who visited Above & Beyond because I wanted to observe how they operate. I was extremely pleased to observe them in action. The facility is pleasing, the staff engaging, the services offer clients a choice of the 12-step or SMART Recovery approach, the staff is committed to ongoing professional development, the services are well suited to the population served and the clients are enthusiastic about the services they participate in. Above & Beyond has done an outstanding job!”
